Cheeses Loves Me

a post in honor of Hans, who directed us to the Glorious Place of The Cheese.

We spent Easter weekend (awhile ago now) in the Netherlands, mostly because our friend Hans had told us that there was a special cheese market there. And you know how the Phillipses love cheese. But in Alkmaar, cheese glory reached new heights, even for us.

It was like all the cheese in the world had been piled up in one small Dutch square. The Alkmaar Kaasmarkt has been going for over 400 years. Yes, 400 years. Every Friday morning the cheese is inspected and a few men from each of the four cheese guilds weigh all of the cheese, transporting it back and forth on colored cheese sleds. In the meantime, there are free samples.

After the Kaasmarkt, we visited the Cheese Museum, the big, church-looking (Temple of Cheese?) on the left hand side of the square. The entrance ticket was...a piece of cheese.
